The scam that looked official

Official-looking documents
Letters, seals, specifications, and confident language made a fabricated sale feel legitimate.
Exclusive knowledge
The opportunity felt valuable partly because the public supposedly knew nothing about it.
A believable distortion
The tower was real. The maintenance concerns were plausible. The sale was a complete invention.
The most destructive spiritual deception does not always deny God. It presents a version of Him that people cannot trust.

God’s commands reveal the choices and motives quietly damaging the life beneath the surface.
The law does not expose sin to humiliate you. It reveals what must be healed.
Paul wrote, “I would not have known sin except through the law.” Jesus then carried the diagnosis deeper: murder begins with contempt, adultery begins with cultivated desire, and religious performance can conceal pride.

Does criticism equal murder?+
Not every disagreement, correction, or criticism violates the commandment against murder. Jesus does teach that contempt, hatred, and dehumanizing speech belong to the same moral trajectory.
The point is not that every harsh word is identical to homicide. It is that God cares about the inward hostility from which outward harm grows.
The two-part deception
The Scam Distorts Both Law and Grace
Two opposite-sounding messages can keep a person equally distant from Jesus.
Perform well enough and God will accept you.
The law becomes a ladder. Religion becomes image management. The outcome is pride through comparison—or despair through failure.
Because Jesus saves, God’s law no longer matters.
Grace becomes permission to remain unchanged while sin continues damaging character, freedom, and relationships.

03 Obedience becomes the fruit of a relationship already restored.
Grace forgives you, reconnects you to Christ, and begins producing a new life. It does not lower the value of love.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church teaches that God’s law expresses His love and character, points out sin, and awakens the need for a Savior. Salvation rests entirely on Christ, while obedience is the fruit of faith.
The character behind the commands
God’s Law Is Not a Cage Surrounding Life
Human laws can be revised, repealed, or manipulated. God’s moral law is connected to His character and the kind of reality love creates.
Idolatry asks a career, relationship, possession, or image to become the source of identity.
Honesty protects the relational world in which intimacy and cooperation become possible.
Faithfulness protects dignity, commitment, families, and the vulnerable.
Sabbath interrupts endless production and restores identity to the Creator rather than performance.
Gratitude frees the heart from a competition it can never finally win.
Love God completely and love your neighbor as yourself.
THE DESIGNThe commandments reveal what God values: people over possessions, covenant over appetite, truth over manipulation, and love over exploitation.

Are moral laws identical to physical laws?+
No. Gravity describes a regular physical relationship. Moral commandments address personal beings who can choose, love, repent, forgive, and accept responsibility.
The comparison is useful only in showing that reality has structure and choices have consequences. Moral life must never be reduced to a mechanical formula.
Consequences and judgment
Does Sin Harm Us—or Does God?
The honest biblical answer is more nuanced than either slogan.
Sin carries destruction within itself.
- Deception produces distrust.
- Addiction reshapes desire.
- Pride resists correction.
- Repeated choices form character.
Love does not permit evil to rule forever.
- God defends victims.
- He restrains entrenched violence.
- He exposes hidden injustice.
- He brings rebellion to an end.
Scripture presents sin growing toward death. It also presents God as an active judge. The Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, Ananias and Sapphira, and the final judgment cannot responsibly be reduced to impersonal cause and effect.
God is not arbitrary, sadistic, or eager to destroy. Yet love does not require Him to preserve violence and rebellion forever.
The first death and the second death+
Everyone presently dies within a mortal world. Revelation describes the “second death” as the irreversible end of rebellion after resurrection and judgment.
What about the Flood, Sodom, and Ananias?+
These accounts portray God judging entrenched evil while repeatedly expressing His desire for repentance and life. Calling every judgment merely “therapeutic” can minimize its seriousness. Calling God vindictive ignores His patience, warnings, rescue efforts, and stated desire to save.
The Sabbath as a case study
The Commandment Christianity Reinterpreted
The fourth commandment identifies the seventh day as the Sabbath. Its history raises a serious question about Scripture, tradition, and authority.
The Sabbath enters the biblical story before Israel and before human religious institutions.
Deuteronomy connects Sabbath with release from slavery and domination.
He opposed legalistic distortions while preserving the day as a gift.
Early Christians gathered on Sunday; Constantine later gave it civil status, and church councils reinforced it.
A FAIR DISTINCTION
This guide does not claim Constantine invented Sunday worship, that Sunday-keeping Christians are insincere, or that Saturday observance earns salvation. It presents the Adventist conclusion that Scripture never transfers the Sabbath’s sanctity from the seventh day to the first.

Sunday gatherings existed before Constantine. His A.D. 321 law later restricted many urban activities on the “venerable day of the Sun.” Canon 29 of the Council of Laodicea then instructed Christians not to rest on Saturday and to honor the Lord’s Day instead.

The question is not whether sincere Christians worship on Sunday. It is whether ecclesiastical tradition possesses authority to replace the specific seventh day identified in the commandment.
The remedy behind the law
Jesus Is Not the Alternative to God’s Character
The gospel is not a story in which Jesus rescues humanity from an unloving Father. God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.
His compassion, truth, courage, and self-sacrifice reveal what God has always been like.
You are not invited to earn acceptance through anxious religious performance.
The Holy Spirit begins forming the love the commandments described.
WHAT YOU HAVE DISCOVERED
- God’s law reveals sin but cannot save from sin.
- The commandments describe love in action.
- Obedience cannot purchase salvation.
- Grace does not make transformation unnecessary.
- Judgment is real, but God is not arbitrary or sadistic.
- Jesus reveals the Father rather than protecting us from Him.
- The Sabbath presents a test case of Scripture, tradition, rest, and authority.
The deepest decision is not merely which day appears on your calendar. It is whether fear, convenience, tradition, or Jesus will have the final authority in shaping your faith.

Have I viewed God’s commands as the demands of a controller—or the guidance of a Father who knows what destroys and restores human life?
Prayer: Jesus, expose every false picture of God I have accepted. Forgive me for trying to earn what You offer as a gift and for resisting the changes Your love requires. Write Your character within me. Teach me to trust Your Word above fear, convenience, and tradition. Give me courage to follow wherever truth leads. Amen.

What this guide is not saying+
- That commandment keeping earns eternal life.
- That every consequence is a direct punishment from God.
- That Christians who disagree about Sabbath are dishonest.
- That external Sabbath observance proves inward faithfulness.
- That serious mental illness, addiction, or relational trauma can be cured by religious effort alone.
- That God’s law should be enforced through civil coercion.
Truth is not another weapon with which to condemn people. Its purpose is freedom, healing, and a clearer relationship with Jesus.
